Simple Kitchen Island Design Ideas

Many people that live in white kitchens are lucky enough to have the corner of their living room, dining room or den. The kitchen is located in this corner and serves as the kitchen for all family members.

A beautiful, but boring, white kitchen can be made to look inviting by adding some color and decorating the kitchen island with a light colored material such as dark green or brown. To make a well-lit area for cooking and preparing meals, small table lamps should be used, instead of the large fluorescent lamps often seen in the kitchen. Lamps are a natural fit in a kitchen, especially when they are located near the sink where cooking takes place.

If the kitchen is located in the middle of the room, dark island furniture can be placed along the walls of the island. Using dark green and brown cabinetry, one can add a touch of color and pattern to the kitchen while still maintaining the neutral color scheme. The darker woods create a rustic and cozy feel, which is often found in white kitchens.

It is easier to decorate the kitchen island as it is located at the middle of the room, rather than trying to decorate the island from every possible angle. By using lighter shades, the kitchen island is more inviting. The darker tones work well to add a dramatic mood to the space.

Before placing linens, accessories and dishes on the island, it is important to allow the white kitchen to have an even and uniform look. Putting something out of place will destroy the symmetry of the island. Utilizing rugs or blankets can be strategically placed around the island. This allows for easy movement of the objects from one area to another.

Placing a dish of food items on the table is a traditional way to use a coffee table, or place the milk carton on top of the cabinet door. Place an assortment of dark colored utensils on the island to serve the most important parts of the meal such as fish, vegetables and fruits. An island serving area is a great place to place a dining table if there is space in the kitchen.

It is quite a sight to see the white table cloth, white napkins, but black dinner plates. Most homeowners try to avoid making this kind of contrast between light and dark colors, because it will distract from the clean, black, white, island.

It is also important to keep the white kitchen uniformity in mind. There should be no difference between the walls, furnishings and appliances. This means doing everything from placing the refrigerator above the sink, to putting dark stain on the dining table cloth.

Placing either light or dark colored dishes on the island will draw attention away from the kitchen area. The island should be considered as a work space, not just a place to have a meal. All surfaces should be designed in a way that makes them visible from the rest of the room.

Colorfully patterned wall paper on the wall, even though not natural looking, can add color and interest to the island.
