Shaker Cabinet Makers and Early Makers of Shaker Furniture

The Shaker cabinet makers made an invaluable contribution to the history of American design and furniture. Of course, the early makers of these cabinets were from the olden days before the invention of the airplane.

The name Shaker comes from the many settlers who moved west in search of land and the American Revolution. While they were traveling, they came across a house that had been constructed in the days when only people moved in. The Shakers, or the People's House, is where the makers of the cabinets got their inspiration.

The original group that came to this house included several family members, friends, neighbors, and even persons families who traveled to the frontier for work. These settlers were not well off financially.

The group that was able to stay in the new home had food and shelter to eat, and cooked their own meals and cooked their own food for their neighbors' families. They built woodworking tools such as scrapers, knives, and forks.

Another group that joined the settlement and later became the most famous group of woodworkers who lived in those early people's houses were the makers of Shaker furniture. This group, or the Shakers as they were known, designed furniture that has been preserved and produced to this day.

Among the Shaker group, there were a number of furniture makers and masons who worked with their hands rather than with tools. They hand cut wood for tables, chests, and storage racks. Other makers of fine furniture used chisels, punches, and saws to make their pieces.

Today, you can see many pieces of Shaker furniture in museums, and online shops, as well as online auctions and shops. But most pieces that you will find today are replicas that are made using modern machinery and steel.

Shaker furniture may be found in any number of places: desks, chest of drawers, mirrors, lighting fixtures, and of course cabinets. These pieces can also be found in a variety of styles and designs.
