Is White Cabinets the Answer for Your Kitchen?

When it comes to remodeling or upgrading a kitchen, do you think white cabinets are the answer? There is no easy answer to this question and I don't know of any conclusive data that supports the use of white cabinets.

If I were to speculate, I would say that the reason for the popularity of this color is because of the many myths surrounding their use. Myths like: they don't look as good as black cabinets; they don't stay clean as well; they cost too much money.

My guess is that for whatever reason, some people feel that white cabinets look "cheap" or even an "expensive feeling". They don't. They are in fact very much in style these days and because of that, they sell.

I have always liked black cabinets and the way they looked in a kitchen, so when I bought my own house I decided to change the color of my kitchen. After all, it was going to be the first room I would be changing. I didn't want to go out and get "new" cabinets if I already had a white painted kitchen!

So my first decision was to redo the black island. I didn't have a lot of room to do that but my husband has grown up very quickly and he had an idea of what I wanted done.

Part of the renovation involved replacing the foundation, the subfloor and the heating and cooling. This made the job much easier because I already had the subfloor and the foundation, plus I already knew how to install cabinets.

After I redid the black island, I painted the rest of the room and added window treatments to keep the sunlight out of the kitchen. I also made sure to keep the floor as clean as possible by sweeping and mopping the kitchen every day.

The next part of the renovation was to redo the sink. Again, my husband came up with a great solution. He gave me a simple rule: if the cabinet doors and drawers were the same color as the wall then I could use those as inspiration.

After I got my first set of white cabinets (these would match the black island), I found that the black doors and drawers matched the white cabinet perfectly. Now, even though they still don't match exactly, they look great.

And now I have two sets of black cabinet doors and drawers that match the white island perfectly. My new kitchen looks beautiful and I can't wait to open my new cabinets. They will really take your breath away.
