Setting Up Your Drawer Depth

Standard cabinet height and depth are the two measurements that you must take into account when purchasing a new piece of furniture. You need to make sure that you get these measurements right the first time.

First you have to measure the height of your existing cabinets. This is so you know the actual distance from your wall to the top of your cabinet. Next you need to calculate the depth of the drawer and double that so you have an accurate measurement of the depth of your drawer.

Cut these measurements out on paper and lay them out for reference when you start the project. The depth of your drawer will help you determine the depth of the unit itself. The height and width measurements will help you figure out how to fit your new piece of furniture into your room.

When you're planning the layout of your new drawer, it's best to determine where it will be placed in relation to the walls. This will give you a good starting point when you're looking at the depth of the drawers themselves. If you plan to put the drawer on the left side of the front door, for example, you would measure the depth of the drawer on that side of the door, multiply that by a quarter, and then you would double that number.

This will give you the required distance for the distance between the top of the drawer and the opening of the cabinet door on the left. This number is the maximum opening that you'll be able to use for the drawer.

To determine the standard cabinet height and depth of your drawer, you need to divide this measurement by three, and then multiply that by two. This will give you the desired amount of drawer space.

If you don't want to have to make any adjustments to your existing drawers, or if you have no idea where the drawers will be a combination of the height and depth of the existing unit is sufficient. Just take the drawer's height and add two.

For an open drawer, your height measurement will be the bottom edge of the drawer. Your depth measurement will be its depth. It doesn't matter what you use as long as you get the measurements right the first time.

When you're measuring for your new piece of furniture, remember that you don't need to get the drawer to be exactly in line with the top of the cabinet. If you do, the depth measurement won't give you enough room to place your new piece of furniture properly. You'll be too short or too tall and neither will be right.

Measure your drawer depth and be aware that some drawers are deeper than others. The depth of the cabinet door should be within a few millimeters of the depth of the drawer. If the depth of the drawer is deeper than the depth of the cabinet door, you may need to take a little off of your standard cabinet height and depth measurements.

To determine the location of your new unit, remember that you'll need to take into account the distance from the wall. In general, you'll want to place your unit close to the door so you don't have to squint your eyes when you open and close the cabinet door.

To place your new piece of furniture properly, you need to find a way to balance it so that the center of the unit does not fall above the top of the cabinet door. If you're putting a single drawer on the left side of the front door, you'll need to put the unit just under the opening of the door, not the bottom of the door.
