How to Treat Your Nail Bed Problems

Standard cabinet height above counter is the most common place to find excessive keratosis pilaris. The exact cause is unknown, but an excessive buildup of the keratin that line the fingernails can be a factor. While keratosis pilaris occurs in just about any nail, it is most commonly found on your toenails.

You may not notice the accumulation because it doesn't bother you. Keratosis pilaris isn't painful and isn't usually noticeable.

Even though your nails grow long, the nail bed extends far beneath the surface of the skin. When the nail grows out of its natural length, the keratin fibers start to break down, eventually leading to the formation of the keratosis pilaris.

Nails grow continuously throughout the year, so the nail bed typically stays the same throughout the year. If your nails grow long during the winter months, the deep-growing nails will lengthen over the winter.

As the new growing nails grow into the winter months, they pull the old growing nails right off of the nail bed. This makes the growing nails appear shorter than they really are.

When this happens, the keratin fibers are damaged, causing the keratosis pilaris to develop. When the nail bed grows shorter than normal, the new growing nails become shorter, too.

In some cases, the keratosis pilaris can still be treated and cured even though the growing nails were normal the whole time. However, it is not nearly as easy as it sounds, and you may need to see a nail technician for it.

Usually nail beds can be filled with a special gel, which also works well to cover up the areas where the growing nails aren't growing properly. Some nails can be filed down until they are level with the healthy nail bed.

When you use this method, you should use a nail gun to "flatten" the nail beds. This is to prevent the keratosis pilaris from becoming worse.

Other methods can be used to give you the best chance of eliminating the problem, including: using a specialty rubberized nail polish on the nails to promote growth, changing the type of counters that you use, including the heights of the counter top, and the types of solvents that you use in the cleaning process. Although the nail bed is hard to reach, it is possible to have it dry-cleaned.

When it comes to your counter top, you should only use soap and water. You should never use a chemical cleaner on the counter top, especially to try to get rid of the problem, because the chemicals that they use will only make things worse.
