How to Add Depth to Your Kitchen With New Cabinets

When it comes to kitchen cabinet height and depth, there are some things you should consider when you are designing your kitchen. It is not as easy as putting in some cabinets in place, they need to match the existing cabinets, too.

The first thing to consider is the existing cabinets. They must be properly aligned and put in place so that the new cabinets will fit with no problem. There are a few ways to accomplish this.

You can use a measuring tape to mark the height of the cabinets from the floor to the bottom of the door. Mark the height of the cabinets in each position, one at each end. From the markings take a straight edge and mark where the screw holes on the cabinets will go.

Use the same measuring tape for the depth of the actual cabinets. Make sure to also measure the length of the door from the base of the cabinet up to the screws.

The next step is to determine the location of the new cabinets. You need to be able to get from the marked areas to the correct place in the kitchen. It is okay to make cuts along the edges of the door for this purpose.

If the existing doors don't have any extra room, you may need to have the back removed to clear the installation. Take a pair of pliers and turn the handles clockwise so they are facing the bottom of the door. Make sure you allow for enough room to remove the door and install the new ones.

If the doors aren't completely removed, you don't need to worry about that. Simply use a screwdriver to push the base of the door out so it rests on top of the cabinets. Then slide the doors out and into place.

Adding depth to your kitchen is easy, even with a large island or other tool storage that doesn't fit into your existing kitchen, as long as you have done the work in advance. There is no time like the present to make that improvement. And remember, you can always add to your design later with new appliances or drawer fronts.
