Woodworking - How to Use the Basic Woodworking Tools to Make Cabinets

Woodworking and cabinetry are closely related. You can take an old cabinet and turn it into a beautiful piece of furniture with some additions and refinishing. By using different tools, you can make cabinets that look like new.

Before you start your project, take measurements of the inside of the wood. When you have your measurements, make sure to use a tape measure to measure for the door jambs and drawers. Measure from where the outside edge of the drawer or door is to the interior of the cabinet.

Next, measure the inside of the cabinets where the doors are. Start measuring from the bottom of the cabinet to the bottom of the shelf. You will want to use a tape measure to determine how many inches of space is available inside.

Take the measurements you have taken for cabinetry and apply them to the inside of the cabinets. Once you apply the inside measurements, you can match the walls of the cabinets with the color of the walls in the room. This will give you an idea of what you need to do.

Take the measurements you took for the cabinetry and apply them to the base boards. If you choose, you can also apply them to the foundation of the cabinets. This will help you determine how much space you need for the joints in the floor.

Measure the wall studs on each side of the opening to the cabinet. Make sure you have them in line with the foundation of the cabinets. Remember, the purpose of your cabinetry is to keep things organized.

The next step is to add the design. You can start by adding the design you like best. Your pictures can be anywhere, but you should keep the eyes of the customer focused on the doors, drawers and shelving.

Adding decorative features will give the cabinetry character. To add decorative features, make sure you measure the space that the designs need. Measure the space between the doors and any decorative features. You can use decorative features from the foundation of the cabinet to the top.

After you have the measurements, you can begin the job of woodworking the cabinetry. Start by attaching the doors to the frames. You will be attaching the doors by clamping the hardware together.

Once the doors are attached, attach the backsplash and install a frameless door. Then, place the drawers under the doors. Finally, attach the shelves.

You can add decorative handles, hinges and drawer faces to the drawers. You can make these parts come to life with paint, but I prefer to leave them plain and bare. I add handles, hinges and drawer faces as accents.

Woodworking is more than putting together pieces. It takes time and planning. With careful planning and testing, you can transform an old cabinet into a beautiful piece of furniture.
